De nieuwe Wijnmaker van het Jaar in Spanje


2023 binnen: "Young winemaker of the year 2021"
José Gil maakt Rioja’s meest Bourgondische wijnen!
Zoals vrijdag reeds uitgelegd zijn wij ontzettend trots op de wijnen van “Vignerons de la Sonsierra", de naam die José en Vicky Gil aan hun micro-domeintje hebben gegeven.

Zijn perceel-wijnen of Cru’s waren vrijdag dadelijk uitverkocht, maar vandaag krijgt u een 2e kans want ook hun village-wijnen hebben nog nooit zo hoog gescoord. Met reden: 2023 is een topjaar qua kwaliteit, maar een klein jaar qua productie.

En zijn wijnen waren zo al zo zeldzaam! Maar gelukkig was 2022 een uitbundig jaar en hebben we daar wel nog wat (heel!) beperkt beschikbaar:

Geloof me, dit is voor mij één van de spannendste domeinen uit Rioja. Tempranillo van absoluut topniveau met Bourgondische allures. En bovendien aan een ongelooflijke prijs/kwaliteit!

Hieronder een overzicht van de 2 fantastische village wijnen uit 2023. Het gaat om de 2 dorpen: San Vicente de la Sonsierra en Labastida.

"The village red 2023 Viñedos en Labastida was produced with grapes from old vines, three plots of very old vines ranging from 60 to 100 years of age on different soils, mostly sandy and fine, all very rich in limestone, where they have field blends of Tempranillo with Garnacha and Viura. The key is that they added a centenary plot that is now the backbone of the wine and has almost 50% Garnacha, so the final blend is almost 35% Garnacha. It fermented in stainless steel and concrete vats with 30% full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter barrels for 11 months. The nose is subtler than that of the San Vicente, cleaner and more elegant, and the palate is similar, with very fine and elegant tannins with a little chalkier grip. This has complexity and depth. This is terribly precise and elegant, balanced and harmonious, with the ingredients and balance between them to develop nicely in bottle. They also grew in volume here. 5,000 bottles were filled in September 2024."

"The village red 2023 Viñedos en San Vicente de la Sonsierra was produced with Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura grapes from younger and older vines in the village with different altitudes and expositions. It fermented with 25% full clusters in concrete and stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter oak barrels and 40% in raw concrete vats for 11 months. It has a moderate 13.6% alcohol, reflecting a slightly less warm and ripe year with better freshness in the wines than 2022. They have included some more plots (some in La Canoca), and it has a little less Garnacha (because of hail). So, it's slightly different. It's more serious and a little more elegant. It's still very young and undeveloped, and the wine is easier to read on the palate, where the tannins are very fine and silky and make it a very serious wine."
