Vinesse goes 'Down Under'
Na de release van de fantastische Kumeu-wijnen van Nieuw-Zeeland, heb ik een kleine maar bijzondere 'Down-Under' selectie gemaakt van enkele schitterende Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Shiraz & Pinot Noir wijnen. Dogpoint, Heartland, Shaw+Smith, Tolpuddle & Standish hebben een onberispelijke reputatie opgebouwd. Sommige wijnen zijn héél beperkt. Grab 'em up !

DOG POINT | MARLBOROUGH | NEW-ZEALAND
 
James Healy & Ivan Sutherland, besloten Cloudy Bay achter zich te laten en hun eigen project Dog Point op te starten. Ondertussen maken ze 'textbook' Sauvignon in Marlborough.

RobertParker.com: 92/100. Perhaps the most complex regular Savvy I can recall from Dog Point, the 2019 Sauvignon Blanc offers up aromas that range from subtle notions of garden peas to melon, nectarine and pink grapefruit. It's medium-bodied and silky in texture, generous yet crisp, with a focused, slightly chalky and deliciously lingering finish.

James Halliday: 95/100. The clear expression of on-point ripe peach and nectarine fruits is this wine's calling car. A delicate little wrap of oak add spice of ginger-nut biscuit with the swell of an appealing creaminess; subtle acidity holds it in balance all the way. Fruit, oak, spice and tang - the whole varietal experience.
JamesSuckling.com: 96/100. This is a very concentrated, complex and refined chardonnay that locks in on very intense white peaches, lemons and grapefruit, framed in a wealth of fresh, spicy, young French oak, as well as flinty elements. The palate has mouthwateringly fresh acidity, powering fresh lemon and peach flavors into a long, tautly wound finish. Drink or hold.  

Shaw+Smith Shiraz Adelaide Hills 2017   28.00€
James Halliday: 97/100. Time for a standing ovation. This is superb in its complexity, fruit power and persistence. It’s a meaty, clovey, spice-ridden shiraz, but the core is spread with dense plum, redcurrant, anise and violets. That meatiness though: it’s gorgeous. And when combined with wood smoke and peppercorns, it puts the stars within reach. It is simply gorgeous !
JancisRobinson.com: 17.5/20. Absolutely brilliant nose that gives classic stemmy funk as well as rich black fruit, meat and smoke. The full package. Utterly delicious, and pushes all the Syrah buttons ! That stemmy component is completely compelling.

Het project van Shaw & Smith op het eiland Tasmanië. De Tolpuddle-vineyard is een van de oudste & meest geprezen wijngaarden op het eiland. De Chardonnay werd onlangs uitgeroepen door International Wine Challenge als de 'beste witte wijn' van de wereld. Dit moet je uiteraard met een grote korrel zout nemen, maar betekent wel dat we hier te maken hebben met steengoede wijnen !

Tolpuddle Chardonnay Tasmania 2019  45.00€
JamesSuckling.com: 98/100. This has power and complexity and the right grade of reductive flair, overlaid on fresh yellow grapefruit and peach with flint and wet chalk, as well as attractive oak in the background. The palate has mouthwatering white-peach and lemon flavors with a deep draw of acidity that drives the finish in really deep, precise and fresh. Lip-smacking resolve here. Elegance, poise and whip-cracking freshness. Drink over the next six years.

Tolpuddle Pinot Noir 2018  49.00€
James Halliday: 97/100. Hand-picked, a combination of whole bunch and whole berry in open fermenters, matured in French oak (33% new) for 9 months. It is a portrait of top end Tasmanian pinot noir, intensely aromatic and achieves complexity and depth to its spice-laden berry aromas and flavours. Beautiful !
JancisRobinson.com: 17.5/20. Less fruit intensity than the Shaw+Smith from Adelaide Hills, but more herbal character and layers of complexity on the finish – chocolate, fennel, liquorice, soy. Finely ground tannins give light grip on the palate, and there’s a long, gradual fade. Lots of ageability.

Standish 'The King of Barosso Shiraz'

De wijnen afkomstig van zéér oude stokken zijn intens, complex, maar ook  harmonieus & elegant. Een micro-opbrengst aan briljante & superlatieve wijnen. Carry on mate !

Standish 'The Standish' Barossa Valley 2017   95.00€
RobertParker.com: 96/100. Lifted, herbal notes of mint, thyme and sage appear on the nose of the 2017 The Standish Shiraz. They're followed by waves of raspberries and more raspberries, fleshing out the full-bodied palate and lingering onto the long, silky finish, where they're joined by savory roasted-meat and espresso notes. While almost approachable now, a few years in the cellar surely wouldn't hurt.
 
Standish 'The Relic' Barossa Valley 2017   95.00€
RobertParker.com: 97/100. Standish's 2017 The Relic Shiraz-Viognier includes 2% Viognier, just enough to soften the wine and add a floral element on the nose. Gorgeous scents of brambly blackberries and anise lead into a wine that's full-bodied and plush, long and silky, adding hints of cocoa and espresso on the finish.

Standish 'Lamella' Barossa Valley 2017   95.00€
RobertParker.com: 98/100. The star of this year's lineup is the 2017 Lamella Shiraz, sourced from a single dry-grown Eden Valley vineyard in the vicinity of Henscke's Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace vineyards. It shows a healthy dusting of cracked peppery and dried spices but also layers of red and blue fruit and savory notes of black olives and espresso. Full-bodied and silky but taut, it ideally needs another 2-3 years of cellaring to soften the tannins on the long, dusty finish.
