Na de schitterende scores van RobertParker.com voor Tenuta di Trinoro, valt nu Castellare di Castellare in de prijzen ! Antonio Galloni gaf topscores voor alle Chianti Classico wijnen. De I SODI 2016 (tweede hoogst scorende Chianti aan minder dan de helft van de prijs !) wordt eindelijk erkend als één van de grootste wijnen uit Toscane. Ook het zusterbedrijf ROCCA DI FRASSINELLO (joint-venture met Lafite Rotschild) kreeg topscores voor de jaargang 2016.

It was a key moment in my understanding of the region and the potential of its wines. Since then, Panerai and Cellai have scaled even greater heights. This year’s wines are tremendous. The 2018 Chianti Classico is the sort of wine readers should buy by the case. It is delicious and affordable. At the other end of the spectrum, the 2016 I Sodi di San Niccolò is truly epic. Antonio Galloni's Vinous.com: 98/100 Castellare's I Sodi di San Niccolò is the single most overlooked high-end wine in Tuscany today. The 2016 picks up where the 2015 left off. A rush of inky dark fruit, lavender, spice, licorice, gravel, blueberry and menthol builds as the 2016 shows off its exceptional balance and pedigree. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2016 needs a few years in bottle to fully come together. Even so, the 2016 has been nothing less than spectacular on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. In a word: MONUMENTAL !!

Antonio Galloni's Vinous.com: 92/100 The 2018 Chianti Classico is an absolutely joyous wine. Bright red cherry fruit, tangy acids and sweet floral notes all run a translucent, super-expressive Chianti Classico that quite frankly knocks it out of the park. The 2018 is so delineated, so vibrant and just so incredibly delicious. The purity of the flavors is just remarkable. The oak needs a bit of time to fully integrate, but it already has over the last few months. This is what Sangiovese (called Sangioveto here) and Chianti Classico are all about. Best of all, the 2018 is a screaming value. Don't miss it.

Antonio Galloni's Vinous.com: 93/100 The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva balances the natural richness of the year with the translucent beauty of Sangiovese. Succulent dark cherry, cedar, tobacco, licorice and dried herbs all run through the 2017. The warm, dry season gives the Riserva slightly softer contours, but there is plenty of energy and vibrancy. This is another fabulous wine from proprietor Paolo Panerai and longtime winemaker Alessandro Cellai.

Antonio Galloni's Vinous.com: 93/100 The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggiale is engaging from start to finish. Dark cherry, plum, spice, cedar, licorice and tobacco are some of the notes that flesh out as the 2017 sits in the glass. Here, too, winemaker Alessandro Cellai captures a striking interplay between the overtness of the year and the classicism of Sangiovese and Chianti Classico.

Antonio Galloni's Vinous.com: 93/100 The 2016 Ornello is once again the hidden gem in this lineup in 2016. Rich and boisterous on the palate, the 2016 offers up serious resonance. The blend of Sangioveto, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah works especially well here. Dark cherry, chocolate, spice and licorice build into the ample, creamy finish. If I could only choose one wine from this range to drink, it would be the Ornello without question !

Antonio Galloni's Vinous.com: 94/100 The 2016 Rocca di Frassinello is superb. In fact, the 2016 may be one of the very best vintages of this wine I have ever tasted. Fresh, nuanced and beautifully delineated, the 2016 is all class. Dark cherry, chocolate and spice are some of the many nuances that open up in the glass, but more than anything else, the 2016 is a wine of balance and total harmony, with all of its elements already in harmony. The blend is 60% Sangioveto, 20% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.
